Reciprocity

Dear friends,
For this week's Teachings Tuesday, I am deeply honoured to share a message from Raven Lacerte, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Moose Hide Campaign. Raven speaks to the sacred teaching of reciprocity — a reminder of the responsibility we hold when we are gifted with teachings, medicine, and the opportunity to walk alongside others in this important work.
As we prepare for Moose Hide Campaign Day on May 15th, I’m humbled to share that I have been invited to speak during one of the virtual sessions. Whether you join us for the in-person Walk to End Violence in Victoria or participate from wherever you are through the online livestream, there are many ways to walk this healing path together.
Please take a moment to read Raven’s heartfelt message below.
In our teachings, reciprocity is a sacred exchange. It is the heartbeat of right relationship — with each other, with the land, and with the work we are called to do in this world.
When we receive medicine — a story, a teaching, a ceremony — we are gifted something sacred. And it becomes our responsibility to offer something in return. Not from obligation, but from a place of love, honour, and balance.
The Moose Hide Campaign was born on the land in 2011 — on a moose hunting trip with my dad on our traditional territory, along the Highway of Tears, where far too many women and girls, many of them Indigenous, have gone missing or been murdered.
When the land gifted us a moose that year, we felt called to honour that deeply interconnected moment by gifting the medicine forward - and to carry a responsibility: to stand up against violence toward women, children, and all those along the gender continuum, and to inspire others to walk this healing path with us. We began by tanning, cutting, and gifting pieces of that hide — offering them as an invitation to make a personal commitment to create safer, more loving communities.
Since that day, the Campaign has been rooted in this sacred cycle of giving and receiving. We offer moose hide pins as medicine, and in return, we are humbled by the beautiful gifts that come back — commitments to effect change, powerful stories of healing, and support that sustains this movement.
🧡 On May 15th, we warmly invite our dear friends and relatives from Culturally Committed to stand with us in ceremony and learning on Moose Hide Campaign Day.
We invite you to walk alongside us with open hearts, to listen deeply to the teachings of Knowledge Keepers, and to offer your reciprocity through a commitment to carry these teachings forward — into your work, your communities, and your lives. Let your presence, your learning, and your commitment be your offering.
Whether you join us in-person for the Walk to End Violence in Victoria or virtually from wherever you are, you become part of the healing path we are walking together.
One way to offer your reciprocity is to make a commitment to show up. I invite you to register for Moose Hide Campaign Day to let us know you are walking this path with us — learning, healing, and carrying the medicine forward.
This is how we create the world our precious ones need. This is how we honour the medicine.
With love and gratitude,
Raven Lacerte
