The Work Grows Still

Many of you met Daniel Elliott at our longhouse event on April 25th. He was there as our Elder and cultural worker, offering cedar brushing to those who needed care. Daniel is a quiet constant in this community, and we are so glad for his enduring partnership in our circle.

This week, he shares what that day stirred in him, and what he sees when he squints his eyes and grounds his feet.

I see a system still — one where fiscal restraints require careful planning around budgeting, and the arts go first. Music too, for many universities and agencies, their programming deemed seemingly superfluous.

Art really saved my life as a youngster. Music as well can alter states of consciousness. Where do the "bean counters" go for their own wellness? Addictions? Music? The arts represent our higher nature of existence.

In the same way, our provincial budget demonstrates — alongside other important industries — that First Nations issues and reconciliation continue to take a lesser role. Personally, I have had two, possibly three contracts end because of fiscal reasons.

I know we have come a long way in relationships between Indigenous peoples and Canadians. And yet we have only begun the path of (re)conciliation. We will continue for many more generations to come on this journey.

My ancestors endured much worse, with little or no voice to speak their truth. I have seen many allies in recent times, and that gives me hope.

It carries weight to see and feel programs end, or to witness the restructuring of Indigenous relations as though they are less important. And yet I see many bridge builders too. I know that regardless of circumstance, the work grows still.

Looking forward, looking back — it is not just that some areas need catching up. It is a wholeness the world seeks, one that exists as it always has, with Indigenous connection.

On April 25th, some 200 non-Native people embraced connection in our longhouse. My heart screamed a warrior's scream inside, seeing a way unfold that day. There is hope when I squint my eyes and ground my feet.

Thank you, Daniel. For this, and for everything you bring.

If his words landed somewhere in you, let them stay there a while.
